One of WB's pow...Just offering some thoughts...
One of WB's powerful tools is - what will this company look like 10 years from now? So, in terms of WB style value investing I wouldn't touch Apple. In addition to that, I like what Chanos said about the tech space - R&D and innovation are so important because without that done well, one can become a Sony which, just 5 years ago had a much better brand reputation than Samsung and the likes (electronics). Hence, these costs are akin to fixed expenses which unlike a factory which will surely produce goods, R&D may not bear fruits.
Thirdly, sitting in Bombay, I have seen people buy the grey market iPhone5s (a few months ago) for USD 1000+ in addition to paying their monthly mobile phone bills. There is prestige associated with an Apple product, so I love that you brought it up. A Samsung or an HTC might be a superior product in ways, but the pride associated with an Apple product is surprisingly strong; there is a sense of accomplishment wrt stepping into an iStore and buying an iPod nano and unpacking it...
4 - I spoke with my friend in the US who is a big iPhone fan and he said that - look... I can see Apple being the same awesome company it is right now. They have a way with things...
5 - When I look at Blackberry - man, people were hooked to that device and suddenly (in India) I saw people moving to whatsapp on their androids and iPhones. There was nothing prestigious about owning a blackberry - it was just another functional device that did well with messaging and checking mails. But a new iPhone does make one look twice, unlike a BB or a Samsung.

Enjoyed your analysis. Good stuff. tiruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09576188203768579619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7913945856188337130.post-66270860764848592622013-02-04T15:46:10.850+11:002013-02-04T15:46:10.850+11:00Thanks for chiming in. People in HK *need* 5-7" devices to watch videos/entertainments on MTRs/trains. Note II fits the bill nicely. As far as I know, mini iPad is selling like a hot cake in HK and China.

I asked myself: how hard is it for Apple to introduce a 5.5" version of iPhone?

I see upside, not downside here.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14682393043392310140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7913945856188337130.post-5845140804229215782013-02-04T15:12:28.068+11:002013-02-04T15:12:28.068+11:00Nice blog John. Early 2013, everyone holds a Samsung, and in particular, a Samsung Note II. iTunes is getting unwieldy. It does not "just works."

Having said that, the plural of anecdote is not data. So good luck.Peter Phanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07961974357451001679noreply@blogger.com
